Origin and history

The Hotel Geoffroy, located at 13 rue Victor-Hugo in Avignon, is a mansion built during the 4th quarter of the 19th century. This monument illustrates bourgeois architecture of the period, with neat facades and roofs, as well as a garden and courtyard with protected floors. Its classification as Monument Historique by decree of 31 March 1992 includes remarkable interior elements: a Louis XVI lounge, a Renaissance gallery, a Louis XIV lounge with their original decorations, and a former office with a faience stove. The monumental staircase, the garden terrace with its gallery, and the fence walls complete this preserved ensemble.

The location of the hotel, in the centre of Avignon, reflects the prestige of the urban homes of the late 19th century, when the city, already marked by its medieval and papal history, undergoes an architectural renewal linked to the enrichment of the local bourgeoisie. The interior decorations, combining Louis XVI, Renaissance and Louis XIV styles, bear witness to an eclectic character characteristic of the time, where the past is reinterpreted to affirm a social status. The architect or architect identified, Christmas, supervises a project combining functionality (vestibulum, staircase) and aesthetics, typical of the private hotels of this period.

The 1992 legal protections underline the heritage value of the building, particularly for its facades, roofs, and interior elements (floors, decors, faience stove). These measures aim to preserve a witness of the art of living in Provence, where stylistic influences intersect. The exact address, confirmed by the Mérimée bases and GPS coordinates (15 B rue Victor Hugo), as well as its Insee code (84007) for the department of Vaucluse, firmly anchor this monument in the Avignon heritage. No information is available on its current access (visits, rentals, guest rooms).
